Measurement Strategy
The data collection method used in Danielle Durant’s study is the survey. The researcher measured patients’ experiences from the Hospital Consumer Assessment of Healthcare Providers and Systems (HCAHPS). In particular, HCAHPS is a national and standardized database where patients’ experiences or perspectives of healthcare services provided in different medical facilities are recorded. Durant’s study focused on the relationship between room cleanliness as reported by HCAHPS and the hospital-acquired infection rates, such as Clostridium difficile infection (CDI), in New York acute care health institutions (Durant, 2021). The data gathered from the HCAHPS was analyzed using regression to identify whether there was any relationship between hospital room cleanliness and hospital-acquired infections (HAIs).
The variable used to measure the likelihood of HAIs was room cleanliness. Specifically, numerous studies have recommended that cleaning and disinfecting patient rooms in a hospital decrease HAIs.
