People with an enduring physical ailment are at high risk of suffering from psychiatric illness. The cost of medical care in such patients is elevated due to health complications. Mental diseases are indicator of poor prognosis in adolescents, and are costly to manage.Children diagnosed with a long-lasting physical condition are subject to developing a psychiatric disorder due to social isolation and inability to perform daily physical activities. It is therefore significant to determine the relationship between psychiatric illness and enduring physical condition, and investigate whether mental diseases increase the medical treatment cost in young people.
A study conducted in the United States indicated that 14% of young people have at least one underlying chronic medical condition. In addition, 13-20% of them have a psychiatric illness. The country spends close to 11 billion dollars to treat children with mental illnesses (Suryavanshi, & Yang, 2016).
Findings
Approximately 11% of the children investigated had one underlying chronic medical condition. The study showed that 13% of those with an enduring medical illness were suffering from mental conditions. In addition, those with one chronic physical ailment were at a higher risk of suffering from mental condition than the normal healthy children. The overall medical management cost of the people with psychiatric conditions was greater than that of the healthy children. The yearly budgetary expenditure on health care of young people with a mental health disorder was approximated at 2,875 dollars. This included the cost of medication, management and hospital admission of the patients (Suryavanshi, & Yang, 2016).
These findings are important to the clinicians in counseling and management of children with chronic medical conditions to cope with the condition and minimize the effects of stigmatization. This promotes healthy life in children with disabilities. The study also encourages the health care providers to screen any signs of mental illness in children with chronic medical disorders. They should test such conditions in advance to avoid unnecessary family health treatment expenditure in people with the conditions (Suryavanshi, & Yang, 2016).
Strength and Limitations
The study was conducted in the real-world environment thus giving strength to the research work. Also, the research work established the latitude and extent of budget expenditure related with managing psychiatric conditions in the young people. It also explains how untreated chronic health conditions in adolescents can persevere to adulthood and result to psychological and social disturbances. The article shows there is a relationship between the variables which are important in clinical diagnosis and management of health conditions, hence it can be recommended to health care providers (Suryavanshi, & Yang, 2016).
However, the study demonstrated some weaknesses. First, the health spending panel review utilizes a countrywide descriptive selection method, thus showing universal findings which included patients admitted in mental health facilities. Second,...
