My Shadowing Experiences
My job shadowing experience involved shadowing ER charge nurse Becky Michaels in my local hospital. I choose her as she has had an extemporary career as an ER nurse for ten years and five years as the ER charge nurse, where she manages all the nurses and ensures they provide proper care to all patients while achieving the hospital's goal. Additionally, as I want to become an ER nurse, learning from one of the most experienced nurses in the hospital would offer me a wealth of experience in both perspectives. My job shadowing experience would begin at 7:am, with a sit-down to discuss issues in her docket for the day. Next, all ER nurses would meet to talk about the shift, delegate responsibilities, and what to expect. Next, we would go around the ER to see and talk to different patients and their families about their experiences at the ER and supervise other nurses. My aim of shadowing the ER charge nurse was to learn about ER nursing and see whether it is the field I want to join. Also, to experience the everyday schedule of an ER nurse and assess which of my skills matches this field.
Impact of the Organizational Communication Style on my Leader's Ability to be an Effective Leader
The hospital's primary communication is assertiveness. Assertiveness helped charge nurse Michaels be an effective leader by employing confidence and directness to communicate and direct all nurses without being rude, selfish, or manipulating them. The ER can be crazy at times as multiple cases come in at once, occupying every nurse's attention. Also, the staff may want to start conversations with the nurse and get what they want. By being assertive, she was constructive in directing her staff through all the different emergencies, strongly passed her concerns or recommendations, and followed through to see that everyone understood what was expected. Also, she stood firm about her decisions while actively listening to their concerns.
How do Organizational Culture and Communication Styles Affect Leaders in Organizations?
According to SHRM (2021), organizational communication style and culture are essential components of a thriving institution. Effective communication facilitates gaining trust, guiding employees' passion and efforts to achieve the organization's goals and bring about positive change. According to Landry (2019), a good organizational culture allows communication, which incorporates active listening, enables leaders to know when to talk to their staff and when to listen. By listening to employees' opinions, complaints, and ideas, one can develop a safe and productive culture that allows for confidently expressing themselves, making decisions together, and being motivated (Landry, 2019).
Did my Leader Display Vision in Her Work? Did the Vision Guide Her?
My ER charge nurse leader displayed vision in her work during our rounds in the ER. She demonstrated her vision to transform the hospital's ER department into a world-class ER offering speedy and sufficient care to all patients that walk in. She wanted to transform the ER staff into an experienced, well-rounded, ...
