Robert Wood Foundation Committee Work and IOM
In 2008, the Robert Wood Committee came up with an initiative to streamline the nursing profession to become ready for future practice. Acknowledging the great need for streamlining, the foundation approached the Institute of Medicine (IOM) with a proposal. The IOM accepted the proposal, for they too shared the vision of transforming the nursing profession to ensure that it was readily equipped to face the ensuing and projected challenges. The result was a partnership between the Robert Wood Foundation and the Institute of Medicine. The partnership consisted of a 2-year initiative to come up with a report that would provide some blueprint for future nursing practice. In addition to other concerns, the initiative aimed to establish recommendations for policy changes that could be implemented at the national, state, and local levels. After two years, Robert Wood and the IOM initiative produced a robust report regarding the future of nursing. The report recognizes that nurses play a pivotal role in the transformation of healthcare practices. The robust report has since formed a great foundation upon which both the federal and the state governments base their efforts regarding reforming the nursing profession.
Key Messages Transforming Nursing
There are four key messages on transforming nursing that form the backbone of the report. The first key message is that nurses should endeavor to practice in a manner that ensures their education and training are used to the full extent (National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine, 2016). This key message aims to ensure that nursing education is streamlined to ensure nurses receive the most relevant education and training. The key message also aims at ensuring that patients are granted the right to choose from a wide variety of nursing professions depending on their medical needs and preference. The second key message stipulates that nurses should be enabled to achieve higher education levels seamlessly, ensuring improved education systems. The kind of training that a nurse receives plays a significant role in making them ready to face modern and future challenges. This key message emphasizes the need to ensure that nurses have access to quality education before and after licensing. The third key message stipulates that nurses should collaborate with other healthcare professionals to reimagining the United States' health care. To successfully achieve improved health outcomes, there must be proper collaboration with other healthcare team members. The fourth key message emphasizes the importance of ensuring that policies are guided by improved data collection methods and improved information infrastructure. Data-driven nursing policies effectively achieve improved health outcomes (National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine, 2016).
