The patient reported that he plays for his high-school soccer team and “passed out” during a game. As the RN begins to teach the patient about self-monitoring of blood glucose, dietary considerations and insulin injections, the patient states, “I am not going to do this, stick myself with needles every day for the rest of my life. Can’t you just give me pills?” The patient also expresses concern about his status with the team now that he is “sickly.”

As determined in the case study, a 15-year-old patient diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes Mellitus refutes considering his self-monitoring of blood glucose, insulin injections, and dietary changes since he fears the injection of needles on his body. In consideration of this, it is essential for the RN to develop an approach aimed at assisting such a patient in adapting to the diagnosis and the approaches to managing this ailment.
It has been established that diabetes and its demands has the capacity to affect the teen’s sense of security and the element of self discovery, a factor that may challenge his decisions to bud and gain independence (Fairchild, 2015). Additionally, this patient may be prone to other physiological changes that are bound to occur during his adolescence, a factor that determines the reasons why the patient resisted insulin injections thus making it a challenge for the RN to educate the patient on how to manage the sickness.
In this case, the RN needs to consider acting as a typical coach through an approach that would result in the application of effective strategies in assisting this patient to cope with the diagnosis of this illness (Nuti, Turkcan, Lawley, Lingsong, Sands, & McComb, 2015). The RN may consider the inclusion of the five "C’s" that include making contact, consistency in message delivery, careering, the use of correct tools, and creative approaches in the process in order to convince this teen.
