Elements of the Research Proposal Background             Effective communication among nurses during the delivery of patient care plays a significant role in the overall improvement of the quality of care provided to all in need of medical services. For instance, the interdisciplinary approach embraced by care providers towards providing holistic care to patients in acute care setting requires a smooth flow of information to achieve the desired outcomes for both the patients and the team of healthcare professionals attending to them. Interdisciplinary collaborations in healthcare may also involve healthcare professionals providing their input from different locations toward ensuring the delivery of safe and quality patient care (Van Dusen, 2017). It is, therefore, important for nurses and other healthcare professionals to embrace the advanced technologies in telecommunication to enhance their communication for the provision of safe and quality patient care. The increasing use of personal communication devices such as smartphones, tablets, and even personal digital assistants offer an excellent platform for achieving the said objective. However, there exist a thin line between personal and professional use of personal devices that challenges the viability of the wide range of electronic devices and appliances to enhance communication in healthcare for improved quality of patient care (Kuss, 2018). Thus, this study proposes an exploration of the benefits accrued to nurses in using personal communication devices to improve patient outcomes in hospital settings. Literature Evaluation McBride (2017) sought to establish the scope of using personal communication devices among hospital-registered nurses and evaluate the implications of using such devices on in-patient care. The researchers, McBride and LeVasseur, based their study on two research questions;
  1. How do hospital-registered nurses use their personal communication devices while doing both work-related and non-work related activities?
  2. What are the effects of using personal communication devices on in-patient care?
The researchers used a quantitative research methodology approach, conducting a survey to collect data and information for the study (McBride, 2017). Emails of a previously validated survey were sent to 14, 797 members of two nursing organizations with national coverage (McBride, 2017). The survey questioned nurses about their use of personal communication devices and sought their opinion on the implications of such devices on both their individual and their fellow nurses’ patient care services (McBride, 2017). The research had a significantly low response rate of only 8.57%, with only 1268 out of 14,797 nurses participating or responding to the survey questions (McBride, 2017). Only 5.65% of the respondents never used their personal communication devices while working, reflecting widespread use of the devices while working among hospital-registered nurses (McBride, 2017).
