Celiac disease (CD) is an autoimmune illness defined by the constant inflammation of the small intestines through ingestion of gluten-associate foods like wheat, oat, barley, and rye. It is also referred to as celiac sprue or gluten-sensitive enteropathy. A genetic propensity of persons carrying HLA-DQ2 and HLA-DQ8 has led to small bowel inflammation (Salazar, García-Cárdenas, & Paz-y-Miño, 2017). Over time, this response destroys the bowel lining and inhibits some nutrients from being absorbed (malabsorption). As a result, diarrhea, lethargy, weight loss, bloating, and anemia often causes intestinal damage and significant consequences. CD etiology is not fully known, but adaptive and innate immune responses have a considerable influence. Genetics contribute to the sensitivity of CD, but environmental variables like gluten are also crucial (Araújo & Araújo, 2012). Unfortunately, Celiac disease has no cure, with the best solution to prevent severe symptoms from affecting patients is through adopting a gluten-free diet.
Subsequently, celiac disease symptoms vary between adults and children, with adults experiencing fatigue, diarrhea, weight loss, abdominal pain, constipation, bloating, nausea, and vomiting. In comparison, children experience pale foul-smelling stools, swollen bellies, chronic diarrhea, and constipation. Moreover, according to Green et al. (2005), a person may experience a condition referred to as dermatitis herpetiformis. This illness is commonly associated with minor intestine lining abnormalities identical to coeliac disease; however, digestive symptoms may not be present. In addition, gluten sensitivity can cause an itchy nagging skin problem that inhibits a patient’s representation.
