Bipolar disorder is a mental disorder characterized by extreme swings in mood and energy levels. Episodes of depression, mania, and mixed states characterize it. It is a serious mental health condition that can disrupt your daily life, relationships, and job (Dome et al., 2019). If you or someone you care about has been diagnosed with bipolar disorder, you may feel overwhelmed. It is important to understand that bipolar disorder is a treatable condition, but it does require lifelong management. I'll go over the symptoms and signs of bipolar disorder, pharmaceutical and non-pharmacological therapies, community resources, and referrals in this blog article.
Bipolar disorder is characterized by episodes of depression, mania, and mixed states (Carvalho et al., 2020). Depressive symptoms of bipolar disorder can include, loss of interest in activities that were once enjoyable, persistent feelings of emptiness, hopelessness or sadness, insomnia or sleeping too much, fatigue or loss of energy, feeling guilty, worthless, or helpless, difficulty making decisions or concentrating and thoughts of suicide or death. Mania symptoms of bipolar disorder include excessive energy, activity, restlessness, agitation, euphoria or extreme irritability, racing thoughts and talking very quickly, impaired judgment and impulsivity, inappropriate social behavior, and increased risk-taking behavior. Mixed-episode symptoms of bipolar disorder can include symptoms of both depression and mania (Dome et al., 2019). These may include irritability, agitation, feeling overwhelmed, racing thoughts, risky behavior, excessive spending, and substance use.
