**You will first create an outline for this paper as a graded assignment in Module 11
The Research Paper should contain the following sections. Students MUST use subheadings A-E in the paper.
A. Description of the public health problem / issue.
Describe the problem indicating the “burden of disease” including morbidity and mortality and changes that have occurred in recent years.
Describe the course of the disease or condition using the concepts of incidence, prevalence and case-fatality.
B. Populations at Risk
Identify at at-risk groups (those with an increased probability of developing and/or experiencing bad outcomes).
Are there disparities?
What are the specific risk factors? Modifiable (behaviors / smoking) and nonmodifiable (genetics / age)?
C. Recommendations
Discuss options for interventions to address the problem from the literature and reliable scientific sources (CDC, etc). For each of the options identify the primary focus in terms of when (Primary, secondary or tertiary prevention), Who (individual, at-risk group, population) and How (education, motivation, obligation).
Discuss any specific interventions / programs that have been successful at addressing the problem.
D. Current Initiatives
Are there specific organizations or agencies (national or local) working to address this problem? What is their mission and what specifically do they do?
Have there been any media or communication campaigns to address the issue?

Description of the Public Health Problem/Issue.
The public health issue I will address is Mesothelioma, a rare but lethal type of cancer. There are four types of Mesotheliomas: Pleural, peritoneal, Pericardial, and testicular Mesothelioma. The disease can be described as insidious because it has a long latency period after asbestos exposure. The condition is lethal because the median survival rate of a patient with the disease is 8 to 14 months, has few biomarkers and has no available cure (Nicolini et al., 2020). Exposure to asbestos fibers enters the lung periphery and the Pleura, ultimately leading to a chronic mesothelium inflammation that helps sustain its carcinogenic processes (Cantini et al., 2020). A total of 3000 cases are recognized yearly, while the mortality rate remains high, at 2500 people per year (Selby, 2023). From the 1970s to 1990s, there was a higher rate of the condition mainly because asbestos was heavily used because it is heat resistant and has insulating properties. However, in 1989, it was discovered that asbestos brought significant health problems; hence, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency finally issued a rule to ban it (Esquire, 2023). Since then, the prevalence of the disease has levelled. The incidence rates are expected to drop further by 27% in the period between 2023 to 2025 (Cancer Research U.K., 2021)
Populations at Risk
Mesothelioma is an occupational disease, and those who are primarily at risk are those exposed to asbestos in their workplaces. These include people working in construction industries, automotive manufacturing, and shipyard workers. Bad outcomes are prone to happen when Mesothelioma finds people with a weak immune system, such as those who have HIV or even those who have undergone radiation therapy. This is because their bodies may not respond well to the inflammation and lung scarring caused by asbestos, leading to a build-up of the fibers and an increased risk of disease progression (CDC, 2021). Additionally, those with a weakened immune system may be more vulnerable to infections and other complications that may further exacerbate the effects of asbestos exposure.
There are disparities in the incidence rates of Mesothelioma, as men are the most commonly affected. 75% of those affected are men, which can be attributed to the fact that they have mostly been overrepresented in the industries (Wright, 2021). On the other hand, women are 25% and have better survival chances than their male counterparts. There is also an age disparity, as older adults are the most commonly affected compared to young ones because the disease has a long latency period. As a result, those exposed earlier for asbestos develop complications later in life. The primary risk factor for Mesothelioma is asbestos exposure (CDC, 2021). The non-modifiable risk factors include age, gender, and prior radiation exposure. The modifiable risk factors, on the other hand, include; smoking, which is not directly a risk factor but increases the risk of lung cancer to individuals exposed to asbestos (CDC, 2021).
