Positive Behavior Support
Positive Behavior Support is an essential strategy that plays a significant role in learning institutions as it is used to improve student's quality of life. Konstantinidou et al. (2023) refer to PBS as "…a process to understand and resolve the problem behavior of individuals or children based on values and empirical research." It is a person-centered approach that helps teachers or tutors identify the special needs of students with learning disabilities or odd behaviors. This approach involves teaching a person, especially a child, a new skill or behavior regarding their consistent problem and preventing them from repeating the same behavior repeatedly. It provides effective and comprehensive strategies considering all the necessary factors to lead to this specific behavior or problem in a child. Therefore, it is an intensive intervention focusing on helping children with challenging behaviors.
The origin
PBS originated in the late 1980s and early 1990s due to the emergence of non-aversive technology, an applied behavior analysis aiming to address the issue of challenging behavior to children with learning disabilities. It involved using teaching strategies, antecedent manipulations, and functional assessment to improve the quality of life from the intervention outcome (Beqiraj et al., 2022). PBS was facilitated by rapid growth and technological advancement of intervention tools for challenging behavior. Today, it has evolved to the extent that schools such as schoolwide PBS use it to reduce the challenging behavior of children with these learning disabilities by providing the support needed.
PBS process
1 Developing a behavior support team
Building a coherent support team is the first thing to do which entails identifying key stakeholders who play a significant role in a child's life, such as teachers, therapists, family members, and instructional personnel. They are essential as they help create a cognitive support plan for the child by collaborating to develop, implement and monitor the process (Denne, 2015). Based on creating an effective support team, four elements must be answered, including who, why, what, and how. Who are the essential people in this kid's life? Why is the team needs to be collaborative? What is required to make this support plan successful that will impact or change the child's life? How will the support team promote the behavior change planning approach to improve the child's life?
2 Individual-centered planning
Person-centered planning is an essential step in PBS as it provides an effective process that highlights the mission and vision of the child. Its research-based process articulates the role of the team members in helping the child by providing a mechanism that establishes commitment (Denne, 2015). Commitment is the most significant factor in developing positive support behavior, especially for an autistic child. It a fundamental for a kid with unpredictable behavior as their behavior changes depending on the environment, like in therapy visits, preschool, and home. It uses group facilitation methods and graphic recordings such as pictures, chart...
