The Theoretical So What writing is a literature/contextual review that critically addresses the significant sources and concepts that touch on your capstone topic. You have already submitted a research statement, identifying the major subject areas and the proposed creative/practical approach. This next piece of writing furthers this process whereby you critically analyze 3 main study areas that frame your research. The recorded lectures and writing workshops in week 8 and 9 will help you with different writing styles and what will be the best fit for your capstone project! Don’t worry if you are not sure about what information goes where and how to tell your particular research story. Instructor guidance and the lecture/workshop will help you find your way! The SOF Guiding Principles and the week 8 workshop with Daniel Drak will help with this part of your theoretical So What writing. In week 9 guest speaker Laurence Figgis from Glasgow School of Art (GSA) will address art and design writing. Also, your instructors with arts-based or practice-based frameworks will share and tailor strategies for writing about your specific areas.Objectives●To research, identify and apply major academic theories that frame your Capstone topic●To directly or tangentially consider the SOF Guiding Principles of sustainability, inclusion and decolonization●To critically analyze concepts that inform, support and define your research perspective●To differentiate your Capstone within an academic, industry and/or creative contextMethod Theoretical framework is a fancy term that puts your subject and approach in relation to other researchers and studies. Don’t be intimidated by this f word! The week 8 writing workshop will help to simplify and make this f-word (framework!) applicable and understandable. To start the conversation, a theoretical or conceptual framework is a set of criteria and methods for formulating your capstone thesis. It serves a model to follow and compare your research to similar study. Frameworks are formed from theories and concepts that are relevant to your topic, and it helps with logically grouping studies for comparison while providing a consistent means for evaluating source materials. As well, frameworks assist in limiting the scope of your study by allowing you to focus on specific concepts and variables. A brief and uncomplicated description of your framework is meant to establish an explicit connection between your topic, academic research, and creative project. Don’t worry if this seems complicated or abstract right now, we will all learn about frameworks together!For some students it will make sense to approach the writing from a creative or contextual perspective. Cultural relics comprises items and remains of historical, artistic, and scientific value crated by human wisdom and labor throughout their evolution and historical development as a society. The types and nature of cultural relics are many and vary with communities, regions, or even countries. Cultural relics represent the culture and wisdom of the people associated with them and symbolizes the sociocultural, economic, technological, and political development level and trends of various historical periods (Sully, 2013). They, therefore, offer a reliable basis and source for modern society to study and understand its history. Unfortunately, a significant proportion of cultural relics are rapidly disappearing or destroyed due to natural disasters, environmental changes, human activities, protection, and other factors (Pye, 2016). Restoring cultural relics often requires a series of cumbersome and complicated manual repair processes. Such technical challenges prompt the need for incorporating new technologies to provide effective scientific support for the preservation and restoration of cultural relics (Qiao, Zhang, Gong, & Gong, 2020). Therefore, the current study investigates the effectiveness of incorporating technology in the cultural relic industry by using an online exhibition to publicize the conservation industry, the process and details involved, and popularize the knowledge of the industry to the general public.

1 Should restoration of cultural relics focus on maintaining their original materials, or emphasize their original appearance?

2 Should components in an artifact damaged beyond a certain point be replaced, or should the work be declared dead?

3 Can technology be considered in restoring cultural relics, especially when the artifacts cannot be recreated via craftsmanship?

Cultural conservation is a term used to refer to all measures and actions taken to safeguard tangible cultural heritage while ensuring its accessibility to present and future generations. It embraces preventive conservation, remedial conservation, and restoration (Sloggett, 2018). The overall objective of any of the conservation methods is to uphold the significance and the physical properties of the cultural heritage item or relic.
Preventive conservation aims at avoiding and minimizing future deterioration or loss. In this case, the measures and actions taken are executed within the context or on the surroundings of an item or a group of items depending on their age and condition. They conserve the items indirectly, meaning that they do not interfere with the materials and structures of the items. Any action that may modify the appearance of the items is avoided (Williams, 2018).
