As part of the major group project, decide on a research question. Your research question needs to be specific, be answerable by measurable information (data), and relate to the broader question from the community partner: How does participation in High Impact Practices relate to success for students at UW-Bothell?
This assignment will become the introduction of the final report. Revisit the previous reading on writing research questions and consider which variables are most interesting to your group (or yourself).
You'll want to:
Review the reading on research questions Reading: Research Questions
Find at least three primary research articles per group member that have information about high impact practices (or another topic for which you have data and instructor permission) and the facet you are interested in
Synthesize information from these articles to make sense of what is known already and where the gaps in our understanding are.
Make sure that your question is specific, answerable, and related.
Your 1-3 page report to introduce your research question can be divided into the following sections:
Introduce the problem or gap in understanding about your topic
Provide background about what is known about this topic by synthesizing previous information
State your research question and justification for why addressing this question will address the problem or gap you stated earlier.
Follow APA (Links to an external site.) format, but do not include a title page or abstract until the final project.
Do include a work cited page in APA format; this page does not count toward the one-page limit.

How Participation in High Impact Practices Relate to Success for Students at UW-Bethel
High impact practices have been praised by many scholars for positively aiding the success of students. Community-based learning helps bring different minds together for brainstorming on an academic issue. Undergraduate research has also seen students dig deep for information to help them answer research problems at hand. The same is the case for internship programs because the students get the chance to expand their knowledge in their field of study. Their interaction with others in the field is an added advantage. These and other high impact practices have been praised for helping students to be successful in their learning journey. Nevertheless, have these high impact practices achieved the expected outcomes that led to their introduction?
Johnson and Stage (2018) researched Academic Engagement and Student Success: Do High-Impact Practices Mean Higher Graduation Rates? Their result indicated that many colleges adopted different high impact practices that their students practiced. Furthermore, even as this was the case, they found out that it did not translate to the rate of graduation of the students. It, therefore, means that public institutions do not record numbers in graduation by offering high impact practices (Johnson & Stage, 2018). Therefore, this questions the effectiveness of the much-praised practices in aiding the success of the students in colleges.
This research is very important because time and resources might be going to waste on the implementation of the practices at the expense of offering other better alternatives. This calls for a questioning of what procedures and considerations different colleges use to adopt different high impact practices (Page et al., 2018).
