Politics and popular music have often been linked in different situations, even though there is a lack of data to prove that popular songs can affect political attitudes. Jang & Lee (2014) conducted an empirical study to determine popular music’s effect on public opinion by changing people’s perceptions about political issues. The research question is, “Do songs that convey political messages affect audiences’ attitudes toward target issues as other media content do?” (Jang & Lee, 2014, p. 115). The study also sought to determine how the media effects arise via direct persuasion or other indirect methods such as agenda setting and priming effects. Research has often focused on the effect of news media and specific media events during the election period. More studies are currently looking at how political messages and information have been embedded in new media types like music and other genres, such as late-night comedy.
