Various commercials have different objectives, which can be to inform, entertain, or persuade the viewers. These depend on the company and the message they want to convey to the public. Based on these, the story is written based on facts or opinions, and the method will depend on the trends and characteristics of the viewers. This paper shall analyze Samsung’s advertisement, entitled “Galaxy Watch4: The Watch That Knows You Best,” based on the correctness of the information, advertising strategy, and objective.
The advertisement was published last August 11, 2021, on YouTube. The majority of the content was based on an opinion from the point of view of the speaker. The speaker indirectly shows the qualities of the watch, then connects it with opinions about what most people like to do without actually explaining the purpose of each element. However, the facts were also indirectly shown, as seen by the glimpses of the characteristics of the watch that may help justify the opinion. According to the National Library of Singapore (2021), facts can be verified by scientific evidence, assessed by logic. Thus, it is true and correct regardless of the circumstance. By contrast, an opinion is based on an individual’s perspective, reflecting one’s philosophies about situations and subjects. Therefore, it is subjective to change and cannot always be validated. Furthermore, it typically appeals to emotions, resulting in false ideations.
Samsung advertised its product while appealing to the desires of the viewers. The statements directly appealed to the fantasies of the people while showing the qualities of the Galaxy Watch4. For example, the speaker stated that “most of us cannot break a world record but feels great after breaking a sweat” (Samsung, 2021). It is an opinion because not everyone is enticed by working out. This is followed by showing the watch that can track the time spent exercising, which is an indirect statement of how the watch can amplify the happiness brought about by exercising.
