Description:
The paper proposal is the first phase of the larger project of writing a research paper using critical discourse analysis (CDA) to critique institutionalized power relations that structure everyday life. The research project should use CDA to critique specific primary sources of discourse, contextualizing the analysis within a scholarly debate or discussion with peer-reviewed secondary sources, including both secondary sources from the course and relevant secondary sources from outside the course. The proposal assignment is intended to help guide the initial conceptualization of the research paper.
Requirements:
The paper proposal must be written in Times New Roman with 12-point font, double-spaced. It should include the students name and tutorial on the first page. The proposal should include the following components.
1. A 1-2 page (250-500 word) overview of your proposed research:
a. Provide a description of the issue or topic you plan to research and critique with CDA.
b. Include a description of the primary sources you plan to examine.
c. Describe the scholarly debate or discussion in which you plan to intervene.
d. Detail your own positionality in relation to the research and how this does or does not affect your critical perspective.
e. Explain how an analysis of your primary sources will contribute to knowledge in this area of research.
2. An annotated bibliography:
a. Include 5 peer-reviewed secondary sources from outside the course that are relevant to your research. These sources should help you further conceptualize your use of CDA and/or engage in a scholarly debate/discussion of the issue or topic you will research.
b. List each secondary source according to MLA, APA, or Chicago style guidelines.
c. Under each entry, write a 2-3 sentence summary of the argument presented in each source.
