Training Methods in the 21st Century
The term "training in organizations" refers to the delivery of job-related instruction to employees to improve employee performance in the workplace. External and internal factors influence the demand for training in organizations, one of which is the dynamically changing field of technology (Van den Berg et al., 2020). Technology affects training in two ways: a) through demands for training brought about the introduction and use of technology in an organization, and b) through capabilities brought about by technology to deliver training to employees. This paper aims to discuss the training methods extensively used by organizations in the 21st Century.
Discussion
Multimedia
Various forms of multimedia can be used to deliver training to end-users. With the expanding use of the Internet and Corporate Intranets and the significant increases in computing power, this medium has been heavily utilized in training. Advantages of multimedia include less costly to distribute, training time shortened, delivered on-demand, and does not involve travel. In addition, multimedia is most effective in helping learners connect new information to prior knowledge by presenting information through two separate sensory modalities such as visual and verbal (Pavithra et al., 2018). For example, reading the word t-a-s-k and seeing a picture of different tasks provides both verbal and visual stimuli that produce dual-code processing and potential for spontaneous elaborative encoding.
The study by Pavithra et al. (2018) consistently showed that illustrations depicting the information described in the text were more helpful for employees to learn than text alone. Visual and auditory (verbal) processing channels do not compete or interfere with each other and strengthen the material's encoding. Disadvantages are that courses utilizing multimedia are more costly and take longer to develop, and expectations of the training experience are high.
The rapid proliferation of corporate networks has enabled companies to leverage this technology to deliver multimedia training courses to geographically dispersed locations quickly and efficiently. This resource is becoming the top choice of many companies in providing information regarding corporate policies, company benefits, and news. The use of disseminating information through a website saves cost, ensuring that information is delivered to all employees at the same time. As a result, just-in-time or on-demand training can be available to all employees whenever needed. Embedded training systems, also known as performance systems, can be used as on-the-job training. An individual's understanding of the content can be assessed immediately, as the user will perform the specific functions while working through the training material.
Web-Based Training
In recent years, the growth of the web and its associated technologies has triggered an interest in using the web to deliver training. Web-Based training is training that is delivered via the Internet to corporate Intranet. For clarity, web-based training refers to s...
