Adidas and Nike SWOT Analysis
Introduction
The footwear industry has drastically changed in the past two decades as more attention is placed on design and star quality factors. Nike and Adidas are two of the biggest brands in this field, and their competition for clients is something to behold. Their releases generate much excitement across the globe, especially if the products are born out of a collaboration with influential figures. I am biased towards Adidas as its approach to design aligns with my artistic vision. However, I still appreciate Nike products and their enthusiasm among its fan base. This essay is a SWOT analysis of the two brands to help decide which company will be my number one employer.
Company Evaluations
Nike Inc is an American sportswear company founded in 1964 by Bill Bowerman. He had experience as a track-and-field coach at the University of Oregon. Together with his former student, Phil Knight, they created the company formerly known as Blue Ribbon Sports (1964–78). Its first retail outlet was opened in 1966 and consequently launched the Nike shoe brand in 1972. Since changing its name in 1978, the company has expanded to more than 120 countries, with its retail stores spreading its famous swoosh logo.
Adidas is also a sportswear company created from humble beginnings by Adolf "Adi" Dassler in a small town in Bavaria, Germany. His experience came by making sports shoes mother's scullery after World War I and, together with his brother Rudolf ("Rudi"), set the foundation for the company. During the 1936 Berlin Olympics, its breakout opportunity came when Jesse Owens, an American track-and-field star, wore the shoes en route to gold-winning performances. After World War II, a personal dispute between the brothers split the company, with Adi's half becoming Adidas and Rudi's half becoming Puma CITATION Spo19 \l 1033 (SportsHistory, 2019).
Strengths
Nike's standout strength is its brand presence as its most influential brand. It is also recognized as one of the 100 best companies to work for due to its emphasis on innovation in designs and advertising. Association with world-class athletes and teams also increases growth possibilities in other fields CITATION DAN17 \l 1033 (KISSINGER, 2017). For instance, it has collaborated with other companies to create products such as running watches, fitness bands, and convenient music players. Adidas also possesses a brand rich in heritage, capable of attracting world-class sponsors and athletes. The company also has a product portfolio with many shoes, accessories, clothing, and equipment.
Weaknesses
Nike as a brand is far from controversial, with the big one being accusations of worker exploitation. According to San Francisco-based Global Exchange, Nike workers face excessive working hours in high-pressure environments. The first instance of Nike's tolerance was captured in 1996 when a picture of a young Pakistani ...
