No-Strike Pledge
If I were the Congress of Industrial Organizations (CIO) or American Federation of Labor (AFL) leader, I would have supported the no-strike pledge during the Second World War. The United States of America (USA) needed everyone’s support to win the war, which adversely affected all industries. Labor unions had significant influence, and internal strikes were detrimental to the country’s position during the war. Even Philip Murray, a new CIO chief, asserted that the participation of labor unions in the war was politically advantageous (Rosenzwing, 2008, p. 504). In essence, this move made unions get more recognition from the government.
Without the no-strike pledge, it would have been challenging to convince African Americans and other minorities to support the nation during the Second World War. In addition, the no-strike pledge showed unity among all Americans since they were devoted to fighting for their country. The war itself gave African Americans an opportunity to join ranks of organized labor and earn high wages (Dubofsky & McCartin, 2004, p. 195). Consequently, unions’ contributions to the USA during the Second World War were facilitated by the no-strike pledge.
