Amazon is an international tech company with operations ranging from digital streaming, e-commerce, artificial intelligence to cloud computing. The company’s success journey was initiated in 1995 by Jeff Bezos, a Princeton University graduate in computer science and electrical engineering. In this vein, the company’s achievements did not happen unintentionally; rather, it took challenging work to attain its position as the largest e-market. Jeff Bezos designed a mission and vision for the company anchored on low-cost strategy by selling everything and enabling individuals globally to locate anything they wanted in one place. He shared a message to current and prospective customers concerning their intellectual property rights protection and personal data safeguards as they transact online. In this regard, Amazon’s leadership employed innovative business strategies to drive its growth and sustainability. The Fortune Global 500 list of biggest United States (US) companies in net sales ranked Amazon 8th. In 2018, Amazon earned $10.07 billion, with annual sales of $232.887 (Alshmrani, 2021). In addition, Amazon comprises one of the giant companies globally in terms of electronic commerce and is the best business model within the virtual environment.
Relevance and Situation to Industry
Amazon retains a significant share of its target market amid rising business rivalry from Walmart and Alibaba. The company traditionally dealt with book sales over the internet. Given the changing industry dynamics, Amazon evolved to incorporate a series of innovative product lines, thus becoming a leading e-retailer globally as well as the second-leading internet firm worldwide. Today, Amazon’s business model encompasses electronic products, computing services, retail, digital media, as well as other categories (Wang, 2021). In addition, Amazon commands a significant share of its industry of operation due to its constant growth from year to year. The company recorded a 27.66% revenue increase from fiscal 2019 to 2020. The 2020 second-quarter revenues increased 40.23%. Though Alibaba has not yet attained Amazon’s gross profit and revenues level, it consistently grows every year. Alibaba is Amazon’s biggest industry rival, followed by Walmart in terms of e-commerce.
Since 2016, Amazon has recorded upward mobility in its revenues, and such a trend is expected to continue into the foreseeable future. Currently, most online e-commerce businesses are recording revenues uptick because of the increased online shopping and social distancing requirements amid the Covid-19 pandemic. Walmart recorded slight merit since 2020 because they were allowed to keep their brick-and-mortar operations open when most other retailers were forced to close business as per government directives. Nevertheless, Amazon’s upward growth trend is expected to persist into the future.
