This report aims to identify and discuss the proposed research design, sample method, sample criteria, data collection techniques and analysis, validity and reliability, as well as ethical considerations in investigating the rising credit card debt among Black Americans.
Proposed Research Design
The study will employ a mixed method approach to get to the “soul” of the credit card users, recognize needs, hidden motives, and emotions, and thus establish their behaviors. The mixed methods research design makes it possible to contextualize user declarations, recognize their subconscious behavior patterns, and understand the rationale for their increased appetite for credit card debt and related irrational behavior. The mixed-methods approach provides benefits to approaching the complex research issue by integrating philosophical constructs of both interpretivism and post-positivism. It also integrates quantitative and qualitative data more practically and conveniently to ensure the research questions are meaningly addressed (Olejnik, 2021). According to Albiston and Fisk (2021), the Covid-19 pandemic revealed fundamental problems within the American social safety net, partly explaining the rising credit card debt problem among African Americans. This research design would provide an avenue for the researcher to get closer to the real-world environments of the respondents, and the obtained information would be presented in both descriptive (attitudes, feelings, thoughts) and statistical (quantitative) ways (Olejnik, 2021). The research design fits into the situation presented in the problem statement section – understand the drivers of credit card debt appetite among African Americans (Raju & Phung, 2021).
Sample Method
Based on the mixed-methods research design, survey questionnaires would be dispatched online to get more information from the respondents within a shorter time. Questionnaires would allow the researcher to interact and discuss various factors and variables with the respondents to understand the problem comprehensively (Olejnik, 2021). A list has been obtained of African American students in their last year in college/university, and then random sampling will be conducted for the survey based on this list across public institutions in the United States (U.S.) in the fall of 2022. Those campuses included: the East Stroudsburg University of Pennsylvania, Indiana University of Pennsylvania, Oklahoma City Community College, University of Central Oklahoma, and University of Nebraska-Lincoln (Ludlum et al., 2021). The sample size included five groups responding to the survey questions.
Sample Criteria
The sample criteria included African American students who used credit cards within the past six months. The population for this study will be African Americans who experience credit card debt, own homes, and/or have health care bills.
