Corporate social responsibility is meant to compel organizations, institutions, corporation, industries, and companies to operate their business in a manner that is beneficial to the society that surrounds them. This includes upholding the community ethics contributing positively to the economic development of the place in achieving sustainable development and livelihoods. This includes the wellbeing of its employees and their families in its inside processes as is then case with the outside with nature, environment and communities. It is increasingly becoming crucial and common practice for stakeholders in a company to become concerned with the perspective the community and civil society has on their company on the aspect social corporate responsibility (Karnani, 2010). However, unlike government regulations, corporate social responsibility is more of voluntary deeds by the corporation of integrating their business processes and operations with environmental and social concerns.
Corporate social responsibility has been put on the spotlight as to whether it is an effective or a sensible means for future sustainability between the society and businesses. Though utterly requisite, the manner in which corporate social responsibility is advocated and its effectiveness is debatable as is articulated in the book The Case Against CSR by Aneel Karnani. Aneel argues that the proposition that companies are socially responsible to the communities and that they would benefit from it is blemished (Karnani, 2010). While it has become routine for companies to claim to be socially responsible, it remains an illusion to find genuine companies that do not prioritize profits before corporate responsibility.
The knowledge of CSR has become appealing to the society and companies are willing to solicit for this impression even for those who a not genuinely in favor by green washing. It is evident that only companies whose social corporate responsibility happens to be coherent with their processes of profitability are quick to embrace this notion (Crane et al., 2009). For example, with increases in energy costs, manufacturers of energy saving equipments are becoming popular with customers which is consistent with the endeavor to conserve the environment. Healthier food stores are attractive for their healthier foodstuffs that reduce on lifestyle diseases compared to fast-food outlets, hence coherence with corporate social responsibility.
