Genetically Modified Organism (GMO) has continued to get attention, often generating sharp debates. On the one hand, some individuals feel that GMO technology is a critical scientific breakthrough that will benefit humanity. On the other hand, GMO technology appears harmful to individuals and the environment and should be avoided. While GMOs have a huge potential in benefiting humanity, their full potential cannot be realized without considering the risks associated with the technology.
The structure of DNA
Deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) consists of two strands in shape called a double helix. Each strand of DNA is made up of units called nucleotides. Each branch of nucleotide a sugar molecule, a phosphate group, and a nitrogenous base (Heinemann & Roske, 2020). DNA molecules are long such that they cannot fit into cells without packaging. For DNA to fit into cells, it is tightly coiled to form a structure known as chromosomes, where each chromosome contains a single DNA molecule.
How GMO technology works
Over the years, individuals have altered the genomes of plants and animals using traditional breeding techniques. For instance, through artificial selection, different organisms have resulted. However, this approach has been limited to naturally occurring variations. However, the advancement of genetic engineering has allowed scientists to control the genetic variations introduced to an organism (Raman, 2017). GMO is an organism whose genome has been altered in the laboratory to generate favorable physiological traits or where there is a need to develop desired biological products.
The genetic engineering process consists of four significant steps. Firstly, scientists identify the specific genetic information that allows an organism to have a particular desired trait (Maghari & Ardekani, 2011). For instance, in crops, the selected feature could be resistance to drought or insects. They then identify an organism that already contains a particular trait within its genes. Through comparative analysis, the genetic makeup with the characteristic of interest is decoded. Secondly, scientists copy the specific information from the organism that contains the desired traits (Maghari & Ardekani, 2011). Here, they insert the desired genetic train into the new genome. The new train does not alter the already existing traits. Lastly, scientists grow the new organism to ensure that it adapts to the desired quality. For GMO plants, extensive review and safety tests are undertaken to ensure that the crops are safe and released to farmers.
Uses/application of GMO technology
GMO technology in crops is critical in pest resistance. Transgenic plants that are resistant to a specific pest are beneficial to farmers. Such crops are healthy to the environment since they reduce pesticides (Raman, 2017). For instance, insect resistance genes obtained from Bacillus thuringiensis have significantly reduced the insecticide applied to cotton in the U.S.
