EJ Screen: Environmental Exposure Disparities on Manhattan and Bronx Counties

Research Paper Instructions:

Please note that this assignment/discussion topic is asking you to familiarize with USEPA's EJSCREEN, a "user-friendly," publicly available, online Geographic Information System, that allows the general public to access and evaluate geospatial information on environmental and sociodemographic exposure factors and to help develop answers to environmental justice questions.
You are expected to spend at least 2 to 3 hours in order to become familiar with EJSCREEN and complete the tasks of this assignment, so please plan to allocate the appropriate time for this online assignment.
The US Environmental Protection Agency (US EPA), "in order to meet its responsibilities related to the protection of public health and the environment," has developed an Environmental Justice (EJ) mapping and screening tool called EJSCREEN, available at www(dot)epa(dot)gov/ejscreen (Links to an external site.)
For this week's online discussion, please
Visit the EJSCREEN site, read the directions available there, and explore the options EJSCREEN provides.
A. Select two areas in the US to compare with respect to environmental exposure disparities (for example, the areas can be two municipalities in the same county, two counties in the same State, two counties in different States, etc.); you must explain briefly the reason(s) for choosing those two areas (e.g., maybe you chose the town of your residence and the town where you work - or maybe you just want to compare an urban to a nearby suburban area, etc.)
B. Quantitatively compare disparities for the two areas you selected, considering both environmental exposures and sociodemographic factors (i.e. "social and environmental determinants of health":
Please provide a concise but clear summary of your findings (that includes quantitative metrics) and discuss if you found anything surprising; you can include one or two visual elements (such as charts) from EJSCREEN supporting your findings.
C. After you present your quantitative findings (comparing the two areas you selected), discuss briefly your experience with learning/using EJSCREEN; specifically, comment whether you found this online GIS tool easy to use, and whether the guidance/directions provided on the EPA website were clear and adequate. Also, in your opinion, are there any important and relevant social and environmental determinants of health that are not currently considered in EJSCREEN? Have you used in the past (or are you just aware of) other publicly available online platforms similar to EJSCREEN?
D. You are also expected to read postings of your classmates and provide comments to at least one of those postings.
It is recommended that your answers should be approximately 400-500 words for A&B and 150-100 words for C. Please note that if you include any references in your responses, they should adhere to the APA format.

Due to their location in a large metropolitan area and exposure to environmental issues, I have chosen the counties of Manhattan and the Bronx in New York City, one of the world's most populated cities. People from all over the world visit these areas in droves, either on vacation or to live out the American dream of leading a luxurious life in the heart of the metropolis. However, due to the adverse effects that human activity in these regions has on the environment, residing in such a popular and large city has many disadvantages.
According to the EJScreen, the Bronx experiences a high unemployment rate of 10% compared to Manhattan's 5%. This is probably reinforced by racial stratification (EPA, 2017). The hazardous waste proximity index is at the 75 percentile in Manhattan and worse in the Bronx at the 92 percentile (EPA, 2017). The cancer risk is at the 63 percentile in Manhattan, New York county, and the 90 percentile in the Bronx (EPA, 2017). The EJ index of particulate matter 2.5 is at the 90 percentile in the Bronx and 67 in Manhattan, New York (EPA, 2017). The indexes that the EJScreen shows reveal that environmental justice is better in New York's central business district, Manhattan, for many variables than in the Bronx, which is a socially vulnerable and relatively poor area. The report tables showing the EJ indexes of both the areas are attached below.
Manhattan is ranked among the world's most expensive, crowded, and dense business centers. Significant environmental issues for New Yorkers are unavoidable due to these activities. In Manhattan, the smoggy skyline frequently makes it difficult to see the sun or get natural light, and the busy streets and packed businesses produce a lot of noise during the day (Foster et al., 2019). This is in addition to the pollution added to the city by all the automobiles caught in traffic and commuting, which makes the air heavy, especially during rush hour. On th...
