Art has been used to communicate numerous messages in the world. Artists from a long time ago have used art as a way to express their feelings and interpretations of their surroundings. As art evolved, artists found numerous ways to exhibit different themes and topics. For example, some artists focused on race and identity, others on the environment, others on politics, and still there were some who focused on the topic of sexuality. Even though each of these topics was widely explored by artists, none has been as controversial as sexuality. The topic of sexuality has had numerous approaches, with each trying to capture or exhibit the theme in ways that showcase its uniqueness. However, for the most part, the focus of this theme has been on the different representations of female sexuality in art. A deep review of this theme has revealed numerous issues of gender and power. Since the world is widely patriarchal, the theme of sexuality was often represented or captured from the perspective of the men. However, today, artists are trying to enhance the ideals of sexuality and break free from the conventional ways of sexuality representation in art. With the rise of feminism in the world, new approaches to this theme are being developed, and it is no surprise that many women are now using art to express their displeasure with the ideals of this patriarchal society. To assess the ideals of sexuality, this paper will analyze three pieces of art and their significance to the topic of sexuality in art.
The three pieces under have expounded the ideals of sexuality in art by including aspects of sexuality representation in the modern world, intimacy in sexuality, and subtle but strong activism against female objectification in art.
The first piece is by Erin M. Riley, and this piece was part of his 2013 nude series. As shown below, the piece captures today's interpretation and representation of sexuality in art. In the piece, a non-faced lady is seen taking a selfie with her smartphone. The piece showcases the modern day's perception of sexuality. In the age of social media, the ideals of sexuality continue to evolve. Both men and women are seen every day taking selfies of their best or most sensual moments.
