Reaction Paper “Indigenous Women and Feminism Politics, Activism, Culture”
“To understand how Cooper moved from an indictment of white women reformers to a call for coalitional feminism, we must take into account how her extended treatment of discrimination on Native American civility and to the effects of the transcontinental railway in Native Americans (Zackodnik 113).”
In the passage, the author highlights on the need to focus on historical account of feminism as well as gender and race in America. There were instances when the dominant white women voices at times downplayed the situation of Native Americans and African American women in the 19th century. Zackodnik points out that Anna Julia Cooper a prominent Black feminist recognized that there were flaws in the dominant view points of white feminists who sought to influence the discourse on feminism as though Native American culture was inferior. The situation of Native American women in the feminism is likened to that of Black women who were disenfranchised and hence a collaboration of minority women would have been more effective in articulating for the rights of all women voices.
