“Designing Work That People Love”
“Designing Work That People Love” by Marcus Buckingham is an informative and interesting article. I concur with the author that numerous companies are unable to fill vacancies arising from the increasing resignations since potential employees find many jobs meaningless, unlovable, and stressful (Buckingham). In that light, Buckingham suggests appropriate strategies to keep workers engaged so that firms can retain them for an extended period.
The rate at which employees are leaving their jobs is alarming, which has been partially caused by the Covid-19 pandemic. However, the primary challenge that companies are facing is that they are unable to get highly experienced and skilled workers to replace those resigning due to the nature and rigidity of jobs. Based on the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), approximately 71% of adults, in 2018, depicted at least a symptom of work-related stress, such as headaches (Buckingham). In addition, in 2021, about a quarter of employees in the United States of America (USA) left their jobs. I agree with Buckingham that workers’ engagement and resilience are decreasing, which makes employees not excited about the work they do. In other words, jobs are not designed to meet workers’ interests and passion, but rather to maximize companies’ revenues, where shareholders are always prioritized.
The most significant thing portrayed by the article, which can help firms restructure the scope of their jobs and probably retain their employees for an extended period, is to help workers love the content of their work itself.
