The book ‘From Silence to Voice’ by Bernice Buresh and Suzanne Gordon creates an interesting and practical understanding on what happens within the nursing field. The authors have helped in bringing to light what nurses go through at their places of work and what needs to be done to improve the nursing profession. The book has created a new way to view nursing given that concepts such as communication to nurses are highly important in building a successful profession.
A major concept presented in the book is communication among nurses. Buresh and Gordon (2013) develop an understanding that communication in nursing creates a gateway to public image of the profession. The need to cultivate on effective communication is illustrated, where as nurses, there has been a breakdown of effective communication among the nurses and between the nurses and the public. I have appreciated the detailed explanation given on how important communication is in the profession. It helps in developing a public perception of the nursing profession. In fact, the concept of communication has convinced me on the need to ensure that effective improvement on how as a nurse I communicate should be effected. Starting from introduction as a nurse to engaging patients and fellow healthcare personnel, improvements in communication are needed to guarantee extensive management of proper care provision.
