Labor force participation is a term used to describe the number of human resources that are partaking in the production of goods and services in an economy. The labor force participation rate is used to represent the percentage of those working or are actively looking for a job (Hipple, 2016). Demographic and social factors such as health, education, gender, and race impact labor force participation.
Gender equality in the workforce has been a major focus for sustainable development. However, the participation of the female gender in the labor force is generally low across the globe due to the labor structure that mainly focuses on the male gender (IMF, n.d.). Health has a positive correlation with labor force participation, in that ill-health can significantly lower the rate of labor force participation whereas good health increase the number of active labor force participants. The level of education determines the number of skilled and unskilled persons entering the labor force. The increase in education is proportional to lower rates of unemployment and higher wages in the workforce (U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, n.d.). Labor force participation is also impacted by race and ethnicity, with the people of color who often fall victim to institutional racisim posting significantly lower numbers in the labor force (Congressional Budget Office, 2018).
Older people might delay retirement to continue earning a living. Older workers experience a lot of stress and loneliness staying home with no formal job. This forces them to delay their retirement and maintain their social connection with fellow workers. Older workers find it extremely fulfilling to be of use in society or be part of an entity that is making a difference in society. Society stands to benefit from a higher rate of labor force participation when old workers remain in the labor force. There are social issues attributed to lack of employment such as poverty, depression, and even loss of lives that the older workers can be subjected to in the case of retirement. Society can evade these social issues by allowing the old workers to prolong their retirement.
