“The “Illegal” Traveler: An Auto-Ethnography of Borders.”
Shahram Khosravi’s central thesis is about borders and illegal traveling. The article documents Khosravi’s personal experiences of his long journey across numerous borders in Europe and Asia. For example, he says that one chilly night in February 1987, he was standing on a graveled road, which was the border between Afghanistan and Iran (Khosravi, 2007). At that point, he knew that if he made one step toward the other side he would be an “illegal” person, and his world would change completely. Borders are what determine how the globe looks, and they shape people’s perceptions. They are also an essential reference to identity and communal sense. As such, the violation of border-regime is considered as breaching aesthetical and ethical norms (Khosravi, 2007). Indeed, it is a crime that deserves punishment. From a racially discriminatory or capitalist-oriented view, borders regulate individuals’ movements.
Khosravi’s article is important to international migration since it not only shows the purpose of borders but also depicts the struggles that illegal immigrants encounter. For example, international migration can be made safe by alleviating illegal activities that occur along the borders. Khosravi says that it was shocking to see that smugglers were working in collaboration with police officers at the borders. In other words, some law enforcers at the border are corrupt, and they are the ones who permit illegal activities. For instance, the border between Pakistan and Iran is profitable for traffickers, corrupt border guards, and smugglers (Khosravi, 2007). Both drug smuggling and human trafficking happen along this border. Moreover, young girls are usually trafficked from Afghanistan to Iran and Iran to Pakistan for sexual exploitation. The primary researchable question is: Do borders promote or eliminate illegal activities among countries?
“The Flight of the Deported: Aircraft, Deportation, and Politics.”
William Walters’ primary thesis is how government policies, practices, and aircraft affect deportation. The author portrays that when many people hear the word deportation, what comes into their minds is individuals being transported to their countries of origin using commercial or charter flights. Studies have not focused on how other means of transport contribute to deportation. In particular, the article gives encounters of the United Kingdom (UK) deportation experience.
