Statement of Solidarity

Other (Not Listed) Instructions:

Any time you express support for a group of the people in it, you are showing solidarity with them. The word is used most often to describe a sense of unity with, for example, a group of workers on strike, people who have been deprived of their rights in some way, or a political group. You may have done this in the past by signing a petition, honking your car horn at a group on the side of the road who are cheering for a team, or joining in a protest.
Leaders across multiple organizations have taken the opportunity to show their solidarity with the Black, Indigenous, and Persons of Color (BIPOC) community by writing and publishing statements of solidarity, a written statement uniting behind a common goal or purpose. As a leader within your organization, there may be a time you will be either compelled or asked to draft a letter of solidarity for your organization.
For this assignment, write a one-page, double-spaced letter of solidarity on behalf of your organization in support of a group of individuals whose rights have been violated. To identify a group, begin by visiting the Human Rights Watch website at https://www(dot)hrw(dot)org/world-report/2021/country-chapters/united-states. Narrow down your search by scanning through the different Countries categories up at the top, and then examining through the different groups of individuals (left hand side list).
Be creative and authentic in your approach. Write a statement that is not limited to generalities and represents the views and core values of your organization. Include a title at the top of your statement with the organization you are writing on behalf of (example: Statement of Solidarity from The Nursing Association; Statement of Solidarity from Frito-Lay).

Dear Sir/Madam,
[Insert your organization’s name], is in solidarity with displaced families in Haiti. In 2020, over 12,000 individuals were displaced from their homes due to cyclones, earthquakes, and violence. Hurricane Matthew displaced more than 140,000 families in 2016 in Haiti (Human Rights Watch, 2021). Displaced families are more vulnerable to food insecurity, violence, inaccessibility to proper medical services, and other dangers. In most cases, the government is unable to assist in resettling all displaced people to ensure that they enjoy their fundamental human rights. That is why [organization’s name] extends a helping hand to these individuals so that they can get shelter, food, water, and access to health among other life necessities.
Our organization cares for humanity since it believes that everyone should be handled with the respect and dignity they deserve. The primary core values are honesty, respect, and safeguarding people’s rights. Haiti is one of the most impoverished countries, which is why our organization selected it to help displaced families.
