The article Lynch Law and Unrestricted Immigration by Lodge (2014) discusses the lawlessness involved in lynching and the adverse effects of unrestricted immigration. Lawlessness and lynching are bad things, but the idea that jury members are unreliable is much worse since it shows that the law fails to function as it should. This state of public opinion is undoubtedly caused in large part by the abject failure of New Orleans politics, a fact about which the nation had known for a while in the abstract but about which it had learned a great deal of very specific information since March 14 when a mob in New Orleans broke into a prison and killed eleven Italians.
