Discussion Board Forum Instructions

Discussion boards are collaborative learning experiences. Therefore, the student is required to provide a thread in response to the provided prompt for each forum. Each thread must be at least 400 words and demonstrate course-related knowledge. In addition to the thread, the student is required to reply to 2 other classmates’ threads. Each reply must be at least 200 words.

Students should post a coherent and well-organized answer to the question/prompt. Forums should be written with formal academic language, should demonstrate proper grammar and spelling, and should show interaction and engagement with the course materials, scripture, and classmates. Posts should be formatted in a clean and organized way—utilizing headings to organize thoughts. Citations from course materials and scripture should be used to support your argument. Include a bibliographic reference at the bottom of the post. Replies to students should be substantive and relative, and they should add to the discussion. Replies which simply say “good job” without interacting with the topic at hand will not be accepted.

Your Discussion Board Forum is due in Module/ Week 6 (100 Points)

Initial Thread (at least 400 words) due by 11:59 p.m. (ET) on Thursday.

2 Replies (at least 200 words each) due by 11:59 p.m. (ET) on Monday.

Read a Scholarly Journal Article about CQ: For this discussion board, each student will need to select a scholarly journal article about CQ in a specific professional discipline. Note that a variety of articles have been provided on Blackboard to relate to a large selection of degree fields and professional interests; however, if a student does not find an article which matches their interests, they can do their own research to find a different article. The student should send the article to your professor and get prior approval before using an article if it is different than the ones provided.

Initial Thread Question/ Prompt: Once you have read your article please answer the following questions in your post: (Questions in parenthesis are suggestions to help guide your writing).

1. Briefly summarize the article. (What were the researchers studying? What was the primary thesis of the article? How did they conduct their research? What were the results?)

2. Using this article as well as other course materials, discuss the implications of Cultural Intelligence in your chosen professional field. (What cross-cultural challenges exist in your profession? How will having high CQ help to address those challenges? What other research needs to be done in order to develop high CQ in your field?)

3. Imagine you were creating a professional development seminar on cultural intelligence for professionals in your chosen field. Aside from simply defining CQ, what topics would you focus on? How would you help your attendees practically apply CQ to your field?

Reply to 2 classmates: The following questions are suggestions that can help guide your discussion as you reply to 2 students:

1. Have you seen or experienced the challenges they mentioned?

2. What other topics would you add to their professional development plan?

3. What other examples can you give which may practically apply CQ to their field? or Are there any related examples from your field of study which may help them with practical application?

The research was about operationalizing cultural intelligence (CQ) and higher empathy and using it as predictors of social closeness toward refugees. The study categorized empathy into 2 dimensions: empathic concern, and perspective-taking. Higher scores from these indicate that an individual has a higher level of cultural intelligence as related to the four included aspects. The researchers concluded that people who have more awareness about different cultures tend to express a warmer relationship with migrants and other people who come from other cultures. The research proved that negative biases and prejudices to other individuals that belong to other ethnicities, usually stem from ignorance. When people have more knowledge about the culture of other ethnicities, they extend more understanding, empathy, and openness to each other.
Cultural intelligence is an important characteristic that needs to proliferate in society. In our globalizing world, the internet has become a means to perceive life from other cultures. There is a need to understand that beyond the difference of language, we are all human beings. Every ethnic identity has been molded through years of interaction with their cultural ancestors. Now, the worldwide web has dissolved such barriers, and people can now live in a global society, one wherein people understand the value of mindfulness and being aware of the importance of individuality.
