Assignment Instructions & Questions
The Assignment
You are creating a short report for the University of Strathclyde Department of Work, Employment and Organisation, exploring organizational commitment, trust, and job satisfaction among HRM students based on some survey data that has been collected.
Understanding the Data
Survey participants were 67 students on the full-time and part-time PgDip/MSc in HRM at the University of Strathclyde. The participation rate was 80% as 67 of the 84 students on this course completed the questionnaire. Conduct appropriate statistical analyses to answer the questions that follow. You will sometimes have to decide how to best present the data, e.g. in the form of a table, graph or written paragraph. Each question is worth equal marks.
Measures: A questionnaire instrument was constructed to measure organizational commitment, trust, and job satisfaction. The 24 questionnaire items about organizational commitment were as per Allen and Meyer (1990); they measured affective commitment (8 items), continuance commitment (8 items), and normative commitment (8 items) in three sub-scales. There were five questionnaire items about trust which were adapted from Mayer and Davis (1999). The 20 items about job satisfaction were as per Weiss et al.’s (1967) Minnesota Satisfactions Questionnaire (MSQ); these items measured intrinsic satisfaction (12 items), extrinsic satisfaction (6 items), and general satisfaction (all 20 items). Participants made responses on a 5-point Likert-type scale with anchors of “Strongly Disagree” and “Strongly Agree”. There were five questions which collected demographic information. Please see Appendix 1 for a copy of the questionnaire.
Procedure: Participants completed the questionnaire in class. On average, it took 10 minutes for participants to complete the questionnaire. The class lecturer collected the completed questionnaires and entered the data in Excel. Items marked with * were re-coded.
Average scores were computed for each participant. The affective commitment score was calculated by taking the mean of questions 1 – 8. The continuance and normative commitment scores were calculated by taking the means of questions 9 – 16, and questions 17 – 24 respectively. The trust score was calculated by taking the mean of questions 25 – 29. The intrinsic satisfaction score was calculated by taking the mean of questions 30, 31, 32, 33, 36, 37, 38, 39, 40, 44, 45, and 49. The extrinsic satisfaction score was calculated by taking the mean of questions 34, 35, 41, 42, 43, and 48. The general satisfaction score was calculated by taking the mean of questions 30 – 49.
Important information about the questions
Questions A & B at the start of the assignment are model answers that are already completed as examples of the kinds of responses desired. You do not need to answer Questions A & B.
Questions 1-7 do need to be answered. Each question will be worth 10 marks. The total score will be multiplied by 100/70 to give students a total score out of 100. The assignment is marked pass/fail. Minimum pass mark is 50. Marks will be given based on accurate calculation, appropriate reporting of calculations (e.g. Ex...
