The Unicorn
Different countries use different symbols to establish their national brand through historical, geographical, and cultural links. For example, Australia and South Africa have kangaroo and springbok, respectively, while Spain venerates the bull. A fundamental similarity in these symbols is the evidential existence of the animals adopted. In Scotland, the unicorn is the country's national animal, a symbol of animals whose existence remains debatable. According to MacEacheran, sculptures of the unicorn form key physical landmarks in Scotland. Key places like the Palace of Holyroodhouse, St. Giles' Cathedral, Linlithgow Palace, Craigmillar Castle, and the Edinburgh Castle boast the symbol highlighting its importance on Scottish national identity. The symbol's origin dates back to 400 BCE when it was first captured by the Greek Historian Ctesias (Smith). In Ctesias's book, Indica, the author relied on travelers along the Silk Road coming from Tibet, India, and the Himalayas.
For over 2000 years, the symbol evolved from a bloodthirsty monster to a tranquil animal that brings serenity and peace and symbolizes Christ in the Christian doctrine. Different communities worldwide have different versions of the unicorn, deriving similar and sometimes different meanings from it. In the Christian doctrine, the unicorn is a symbol of purity and chastity. In Native America, the unicorn represented a fierce, powerful, and masculine creature or spirit that a virgin could only tame.
