While I am not of Mexican descent, I know that the Mexican-American community, which is the largest minority group in the US and has faced discrimination and negative stereotypes. Increasingly, I have focused on how of Mexican-Americans are represented as different and threatening in the media has partly been used to justify discrimination and violence against the community. Even if there are differences between communities, I believe that people can live in peaceful coexistence regardless of their differences. It appears that the media is reporting more on race-based attacks, it is likely that people are not as tolerant, but it could be that the media is simply highlighting them.
Mexican-Americans are often represented as caricatures as a group of people who crossed the US-Mexico border illegally and the folk mariachis. I see these stereotypes are oversimplifications that ignore the diversity among the Mexican American people. I believe making the community visible is necessary is necessary. As much as I like watching films and movies when free, I am concerned that the film industry tends to depict Mexican women are mainly cast as maids and nannies working for wealthy families. In my view, the film industry ignores their importance to Mexican families and how discrimination and low-wage exploitation affect their wellbeing.
