There are varied dietary methods of preventing cancer. However, the Mediterranean diet is classified as the best meal to prevent cancer. In most cases, these foods have large quantities of anti-inflammatories and antioxidants. Notably, antioxidants are essential in the body since they prevent the damage of cells in the body. Different studies carried out show an inverse relationship between Mediterranean foods and cancer. Mediterranean foods play an integral role in cushioning body cells from being attacked by radical molecules which cause cancer, diabetes, and other diseases. This report aims to explore a recent study on how diet influences the relapse or prevents cancer in humans.
Review of the Study
A healthy diet is vital in preventing body cells from external attacks that trigger different forms of diseases. Mediterranean diet comprises vegetables, fish, olive oil, fruits, and whole grains, among others. These foods are very significant because they limit sugar intake in the body, thus improving the strength of the cells (Pounis et al. 107). A study carried the American Institute for cancer and research shows an inverse relationship between the Mediterranean diet and cancer, making it a secondary form of cancer prevention. The diet has vast forms of nutrients because of high saturations from Mediterranean zones. Although these meals are seen as traditional foods in Mediterranean countries, the study shows they have low lipids and low cholesterol, which helps prevent weight and lower cardiovascular diseases (Biasini et al. 34). Although sometimes health providers introduce phytochemical foods to boost the immune system, having good and healthy meals extensively impacts the body. Mediterranean diet has excellent benefits, not just to prevent cancer but also to lower neurodegenerative disorders.
According to the study, it is hard to determine which foods help prevent cancer from these collections. However, paying attention to all of them has high capabilities of improving the body's overall health. For instance, olive oil has high polyphenols, which is essential in reducing the proliferation of cancer radicals. Additionally, these polyphenols are essential in protecting the membrane. MOLI-SANI project, which an Italian institution conducted, showed that the USA and other developed countries have the highest number of cancer patients compared to Mediterranean countries (Pounis et al. 110). In these incidences, that study linked the Mediterranean decline in a cancer patient with diet. Proper diet has helped most of the countries in the Mediterranean to lower cases of cancer. In most scenarios, diseases are usually attached to poor diets, and if a proper diet is administered, there are high chances of controlling most diseases.
The European Prospective Investigation into Cancer and Nutrition also shows the reduction in cancer numbers in Mediterranean zones.
