A Quality Improvement Initiative to Improve Population Health
According to the 2020 National Diabetes Statistics Report, American Indians have a high prevalence of diabetes (14.5%) compared to other demographics (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 2020). In that light, a quality improvement initiative would be appropriate to improve the health of this population. Indeed, it focuses on activities to analyze, improve, and monitor the quality of healthcare services that individuals in the affected demographic are receiving. In the scenario at hand, an initiative to diagnose diabetes earlier among American Indians can be created and implemented. That way, it would be easy to help members of this population overcome the disease before it gets in the advanced stages and become untreatable.
Translational research can significantly influence the development and implementation of a quality improvement initiative. Specifically, it allows physicians to gain relevant knowledge by studying specific patient demographics and implementing changes in medical services delivery. The primary goal of translational research is to bring together techniques, resources, knowledge, and interdisciplinary professionals gained from trials and studies to improve disease diagnosis, prevention, and promote individuals’ wellbeing (Hawley et al., 2021).
