The Seagram Building and the Guggenheim Museum: A Visual Analysis
The Seagram Building is a skyscraper found in Midtown Manhattan, which is in the neighborhood of New York City. The building came to completion in 1958, and Seagram company, a Canadian distiller, initially used it as its headquarters. Meanwhile, the Guggenheim Museum is a modern and contemporary art museum located in Bilbao, Spain. The inauguration of the museum took place in 1997 with an exhibition that featured more than 200 contemporary artworks. According to the World Architecture Survey 2010, it is one of the most important works ever to be completed since the 1980s.
Seagram Building is an outstanding example of a functionalist aesthetic, and it occupies approximately half the site on which it stands. The building is also a prominent example of a modern corporate architecture of international style, which embraces minimalism and rejects ornamentation for institutional and corporate buildings. The building features an exterior curtain wall made of glass adorned vertically with bronze and horizontally with Muntz metal. A distinctive feature of the building that many designers later replicated in many buildings within New York City is the plaza. The plaza takes on a symmetrical shape with rectangular pools placed on the corners. Other features include the façade, a superstructure covered with concrete material and gypsum, the lobby, the grill and pool, and office stories.
