Arcade: These are the arches on the sides of the walkway, and were more common in Parisian buildings
Before the arcade, the themes of buildings being dissected bodies had been established in the literature and influenced the design process in the mid 19th century and early 20th century Paris. In architectural history, the arcade represents space with a beginning and end as it was a place of transit mainly used by the passerby. In the exteriorized interior of buildings, the arcades were integral to the growth of the luxury-goods trade where art was displayed and attracted visitors (Benjamin, 1969, p.165). The streets and arcades are like the dwellings of urban wanderers who stroll the areas and even explore.
Walter Benjamin highlighted the benefits of strolling in cities, and this played an important role in the development and design of arcades. Benjamin thoughts in “Arcades Project” provided an illustrated guide on Arcades in Paris in the 1850s and described glass-roofed rows of shops where world exhibitions became more common including photography artwork. Benjamin also highlighted that the space was designed to respond to street life, and the street culture is part of the urban landscape that reflects what influences the people and places (Buck-Morss, 1986, p. 100). Benjamin, offered to illustrate how the glass-roofed and passages were closely linked to the city arcades, and similar to the arcade there were architectural forms with glass covered passageways to connect streets where shops were linked.
However, the arcades have the ambiguous capacity since there are somewhere between a street and an interior as both houses and corridors. The arcade became a symbol of capitalist commerce and trade and in the enclosed marketplaces consumption influence trading. Nonetheless, the arcades allowed people to compare the world outside doors at a time when glass and ironwork were increasingly common in the construction of arcades.
Urbanism
Urbanism is a noun derived from the Latin word "urbus,” which means city. Urbanism is the study of city planning, urban societies and the place of city dwellers in the landscape.
Urban geography is utilized to understand the urban procedures better, to facilitate plan participation in the landscape. The complexity of a city also implies the complexity of Urbanism as it is focused through different aspects of the landscape planning and the use of public space (England and Simon, 2010, p. 203). This extends to the shape, development, and layout of the city, and the dynamics of economic, environmental, political and social activities in a city. Dibazar et al. (2013, pp. 644-645) pointed out that “Our contemporary understanding of urban living, experience and aesthetics continues to be informed by an idea of the ‘modern city’ inherited from 19th and early 20th -century Urbanism and firmly rooted in western culture”.
