Shanghai is one of the most populous cities in world, with a GDP greater than Beijing, China’s capital. The city, which is located on the southern estuary of the Yangtze River, is the world’s busiest container port and a global center for manufacturing, finance, business, tourism, culture, education, science and technology, and culture (Shanghai Municipal People’s Government, 2020). Although Shanghai’s municipality is directly managed by the central government in Beijing, the city has an extensive administrative unit. The city’s municipal government headquarters are in People’s Square, a large public square in Huangpu District. Shanghai’s housing sector has expanded as its economy has developed, although housing costs remain very high. Over the years, the city has seen the proliferation of apartments, family friendly villas, townhouses, garden houses, and traditional shanghai lane houses. Unfortunately, most people who cannot afford legitimate rental markets are forced into extreme subleasing (Poon, 2019).
Shanghai is a leading centre of tertiary education and scientific research with over 30 universities and colleges, including world-class universities such as Fudan University, Tongji University, Shanghai Jiao Tong University, and Huadong Shifan Daxue University located in city. It has over 930 kindergartens, 1,200 primary schools, and 850 middle schools. Shanghai’s public-funded schools have the highest-educational quality in the world (CSIS, 2016). As a first-tier city, Shanghai has a modern healthcare infrastructure and both Western medicine and traditional Chinese medicine are practiced. The city’s healthcare facilities range from major research and teaching hospitals to small clinics to local public hospitals, to VIP clinics that provide tailored outpatient services. Most expats and wealthy families prefer private hospitals and clinics because of their higher standards of care (ExpatArrivals, 2021).
Despite its futuristic landscapes, Shanghai has numerous parks and green spaces including Jing’an Sculpture Park, Huangpu Park, Fuxing Park, Xujiahui Park, Xiangyang Park, Zhongshan Park, among others. Shanghai is a global shopping destination with giant malls, cheap electronic markets, fast fashion stores, top-notch tailors, and fine handicraft shops (Gilbert, 2020). Most shopping areas include Nanjing Road, South Bund Fabric Market, Xintiandi, Qiujiang Lu Electronics Market, Huaihai Road, AP Plaza, Tianzifang, and M50 Art District. Shanghai has a thriving culinary industry with over 100,000 fine dining restaurants located in the city. There are numerous other restaurants from contemporary casual to fast food to family style...
