Human sexuality normally changes from one person to another; precisely, it is a diverse perception of the person. Human sexuality normally happens or varies across diverse times and cultures. Different people, organizations, and even scholars have defined human sexuality differently.
The same case applies to social acceptance or even lack of it; acceptance normally changes or varies from one culture to another. In this case, the following theory typically examines gender roles in sexual variation in both the contemporary and historical context to better understand human sexuality.
Gender roles are one of the terminologies with diverse meanings, but according to society, it simply means how people are expected to dress, groom, speak, conduct, and act based on their assigned sex. For example, a girl is expected to dress femininely, remain polite, nurture, and be more accommodating. It is considered that gender roles have a great impact, especially when influencing behavior, the manner of approaching things, and the career one pursues. Gender roles, including our families, society, relationships, and even nationally, are important today.
There is this social science theory that fits best or applies to how gender roles are defined and applied either in the past or current times. Social learning theory fits best in this category, and according to it, it is a philosophy whereby folks normally learn from each other via observation, modeling, or even imitation. This theory explains that people normally learn of their free will; they are not coerced or even given direct instructions. This theory has four traits that make it exceptional over other social science theories: self-regulation, observational learning, self-efficacy, and reciprocal determinism.
A pivotal facet of social learning theory is typically the hypothesis that gender roles and development are mainly influenced partly by the children's activities and their tendencies to copy and imitate the models of the same sex than those of the opposite sex. In most instances, social learning theory influences how children are rewarded or reinforced due to their behavior following gender roles (Bandura, 1969). They also face tough measures, including punishment, if they break gender roles. Individuals learn a lot from their role models, whereby they imitate their way of doing things. This theory states that learning normally takes place through vicarious reinforcement. This merely happens when there is an individual who witnessed the role model getting rewarded for behaving in an appropriate-gender way.
Historical View of Gender Roles
Subsequently, culture can be defined as all mere ways of living or life, including beliefs, arts, and the institution of generational demography. There are different types and examples of culture, such as custom laws, religious laws, and clan culture.
