In this age of the internet and social media, there has been a rise of hoaxes and fakes that can be shared quickly across the globe. An interesting one is the ‘gay-only village’ hoax that was staged in the Netherlands in 2014 (The Guardian, 2014). What makes the hoax interesting is the fact that it was endorsed by a city’s mayor, meaning that anyone could have fallen for it. The hoax was engineered by Pink Monday Foundation, an organization that plans gay festivals in the country.
With the support of a real-estate company and a city’s mayor, Pink Monday Foundation announced that it intended to set up a ‘gay-only’ village. The story was even picked up by the country’s national newspaper, NRC and state broadcaster, NOS. The media houses had reported the plan to develop a community for lesbian, transgender, gay, and bisexual residents outside the city of Tilburg (The Guardian, 2014). With a polished website as well as promotional videos, the hoax was easily picked up by local and international media houses and even some gay rights groups. The news about a ‘gay-only’ elicited protests as many were opposed to the idea of setting up an area to protect homosexuals. Therefore, the support of a property developer and a city mayor coupled with the publishing of the story in media outlets meant that almost everyone that read or watched the story fell for it. The fierce reaction that the hoax received shows that the orchestrators did not make any mistake in organizing it.
