How do the cities present to live up to the principles established by World Wildlife Fund WWF and Oxfam?
The cities are struggling to live up to the World Wild Life Fund (WWF) and Oxfam. Oxfam envisions a sustainable city with a reimagined landscape, which is characterized by innovation and integrated approaches that support sustainable living. Similarly, WWF is highly committed to political, public, and entrepreneurial engagements geared to make cities thrive, proper, and sustained themselves, without going beyond the ecological limits.
The contemporary cities are finding it hard to nurture cities that are ecologically sustainable and self –regenerating. Oxfam estimates that 50 % of the global population lives in cities. The booming population in cities occasioned by population grows, coupled with an influx of people from rural areas, and has led to a significant strain on cities’ resources and infrastructural networks. The bursting population, over-consumption, pollution, and depletion of resources have led to challenges in population health and environmental, leading to an imbalanced ecological system.
In response to emerging challenges in the context of urbanization and cities., there have been rally calls for appropriate urban management that entails sustainable local economies, responsible and rational consumption, and the need to enforce legal sanctions whenever issues of health, social equity, and justice, are grossly violated.
According to Oxfam, there are critical features that constitute the sustainability in the cities. Oxfam says that there is no single model that demonstrates a sustainable town; instead, a sustainable city represents a choice of diverse solutions tailored for long-term ecological balance. First, accessibility to vital public resources like education, health services, transform systems, garbage collection, and quality air is necessary for a sustainable city. Second, there must be urban renewal actions through the adoption of practices and innovations that foster and modify public streets, parks, modern irrigation, people waste management systems, and city squares in a bid to ensure that the whole ecological unit is integrated, efficient and self-sustainable. Third, there is a need to reduce CO2 emissions and other deleterious gases, which destroy the ozone layer: this can be achieved via the use of renewable energy sources and the use of alternative means of transports such as electric trains, cars, bicycle, and buses. Fourth, it becomes essential to limit unnecessary over-consumption; ethical consumption is encouraged fair trade and ensuring environmentally friendly supply chains. UNDP reports 1.3 billion tonnes of food even though millions of people face hunger and starvation, which is an indication of an imbalance between consumption and production.
Fifth, sustainable cities are characterized by their ability to re-use and recycle materials. These are the core features that Oxfam has advanced. Many cities all over the globe are putting their best feet forward to ensure that there is an adequate resource, people waste management, re-use and recycle, and reduction of CO2...
