Christian Service Organizations in America
There are various Christian service organizations in America. They are involved in such activities as community service, assisting the most vulnerable in the society, and fighting for equality and regard for human rights and human life. Despite the organizations differing in their definition of their origins, goals, and activities, their primary goal is serving humanity. Some of the most common organizations in America include the Voice of the Martyrs, Catholic Relief Services, and the Salvation Army.
The Voice of the Martyrs
This is a nonprofit Christian mission’s organization which is interdenominational. It is dedicated and actively involved in serving persecuted families across the world by offering them spiritual and practical guidance, as well as having fellowship with those who belong to the faith of Christianity. Pastor Richard Wurmbrand founded the organization in 1967 after being in prison for 14 years in Communist Romania (The Voice of the Martyrs, 2020). He was imprisoned for his Christian faith together with his wife, who was handed 3 years in prison. Both were later ransomed out of the country in 1965. They formed an international network of missions which were centered on Hebrews 13:3, that guides Christians to “Remember them that are in bonds, as bound with them; and them which suffer adversity, as being yourselves also in the body.”
The organization seeks to execute the mission as stated in Hebrews 13:3 through various activities; encouraging and empowering Christians to persevere persecution for the sake of the gospel; providing spiritual support and practical relief to families of martyrs; equipping believers who have been persecuted to win and love the persecutors and bring them closer to God through faith in Jesus Christ; and undertaking projects which encourage and help believers in rebuilding their lives in countries where Christians suffer oppression (The Voice of the Martyrs, 2020). The organization’s activities and overall goal are inspired by the mission statement; to serve Christians who have been persecuted through spiritual and practical help and fellowshipping with others to lead them to faith in Jesus Christ.
Catholic Relief Services
This was founded by the Catholic Bishops of America in 1943 to help Europeans who had survived the Second World War. The organization has expanded since then and it now supports over 100 million people who are suffering in over 93 countries in different parts of the world (Catholic Relief Services, 2020). The organization is deeply rooted and based on the Catholic faith and draws motivation from the example set by Jesus on fostering charity, easing suffering, and preserving the rights and dignity and sacredness of human life. It is mainly focused on the goal of serving individuals only based on their needs; they do not consider such factors as ethnicity, race, or religion as they seek follow the teachings of the parable of the Good Samaritan.
