Democracy is a system of government that is based on the participation of people. Democratic governments are characterized by legal and political equality, competitive elections, and a high freedom level among individuals, i.e., civil liberties (Kaufman, 2017). Usually, democracies employ the concept of majority rule due to their reliance on the comparative election. However, the tensions that run through democratic governments balance the will of the majority and minority rights. Democracy relies on the idea that sovereignty resides at the individual's level (Dickovick & Eastwood, 2017). Therefore, the political community gets its mighty authority and power from the people's will within the community. Individuals may have the right of political rule in a democratic country, but it is a shared right; that is, no individual can claim absolute power and authority (Kaufman, 2017). This article focuses on the kinds of theories useful in analyzing democracy in America.
A democratic nation always has an ideally political equity among its citizens. Citizenship status gives an individual the formal recognition of being a member of the sovereign state (Kaufman, 2017). In a country where the government is not democratic, the citizens do not enjoy the political rights in determining who should exercise political power. They may have rights as the other citizens in democratic societies, but their political rights are limited. Equality amongst citizens is incomplete, restricted, or adequate in some states considered a democratic political community.
