In this class, we learn to evaluate issues in light of the reasoning on all sides prior to arriving at conclusions. We aim to evaluate the quality and quantity of evidence, striving to be as objective as we can about what is most likely to be true.
If you have not done so already, begin by choosing a topic from the Final Paper Options list (located in your online classroom) to use in your writing assignments in this course. The next step is to formulate a specific research question that is important regarding this topic. You may review The Research Process (Links to an external site.) resource for more information. So, if your topic is gun control, you would formulate a specific question, such as, “Are universal background checks effective at reducing violent crime in America?”
Once you have formulated your question, conduct research from non-scholarly sources on the internet (e.g., news articles, op-eds, etc.) that present substantive reasoning on each side of the issue.
Your task is to present and evaluate the reasoning from a non-scholarly source on each side of your issue. There is no need to take sides on the issue at this stage. In your analysis, strive to be as objective as possible, evaluating the reasoning from a neutral point of view. For an example of how to complete this paper, take a look at the Week 1 Example paper.
Your paper should include clearly labeled sections addressing the following elements:
Introduction (approximately 100 words)
Explain your topic.
State the specific question that you are addressing.
Presentation of an Argument
Describe the non-scholarly source (e.g., an op-ed, newspaper article, website, etc.) on one side of the issue.
Summarize the key points made (approximately 50 words).
Present what you see as the main argument from that source. Make sure to present your argument in standard form, with the premises listed above the conclusion. (approximately 100 words)
Evaluate the quality of the reasoning in this source (approximately 200 words)
In completing your evaluation, consider assessing how well the research supports the premises of the main argument and how strongly the reasoning supports the conclusion of that argument.

Describe the non-scholarly source on the opposite side of the issue.

Sex education composes of programs dealing with different issues associated with sexuality. The topics range from human development, relationships, personal skills, sexual health and behavior, and society and culture (Nursing@USC, 2017). This is a controversial issue despite sex education currently being mandated in many states to be part of the curricula in schools, some parents, teachers, and religious groups still oppose the idea of sex education to be taught in public schools. In this paper, the issue of whether sex education should be taught in public schools will be tackled. It will present articles from both sides of the argument to assess the type and quality of each reasoning.
Article Against Sex Education in Public Schools
The article that appears when “against sex education in public schools” is searched comes from a non-profit Catholic website for parents online that discuss ten reasons that sex education in public schools should be opposed. The key points of their reasoning are the following:
Premise 1: It is the right and the role of the parents to teach their children about sex and sexual morality.
Premise 2: The sex education taught in public schools disrupts the values and teachings of the Catholic and Christian faith due to the promotion of protected premarital sex, birth control, and abortion.
Premise 3: Public school sex education provides the same learning style and materials regardless of each student’s individuality and level of readiness to discuss sex and sexuality.

Evaluation of the Quality of the Argument Against Sex Education in Public Schools
The argument against sex education being taught in public schools provides premises that support how it negatively affects the parents, religion, and the child. All the premises given assumes that sex education for the children in public schools consists of physical aspects alone, neglecting other aspects such as emotional and spiritual, thereby supporting its conclusion. The argument did not consider the availability of comprehensive sex education which tackles other aspects, such as health and personal skills that are beneficial to students in public schools (Barth, 2005). Although parents should indeed be primarily involved with educating their children, the first premise presented treats it as an exclusive role without considering the healthy learning opportunities that can be given by the institutions.
