Africa’s colonial history significantly impacted how African states conduct diplomacy in the post-colonial era. Many African countries have implemented strategies of governance that have various similarities from that of their colonizers. In other words, there exist asymmetrical political affiliation between the colonized territories and their colonizers. Others embrace the Western way of life. For example, Liberia’s constitution, currency, and flag resembled that of the United States of America (USA). European colonizers, such as Portugal, Belgium, France, and Britain, left lasting diplomatic legacies that are seen in African countries even today. For instance, the cultural divisions existing in many African countries in the post-colonial era are imitations of colonial partitioning. Colonizers partitioned territories under their leadership to strengthen their political culture. For example, there were those who did causal works, and others were colonizers’ assistants. Additionally, institutionalization is a bureaucracy that African countries inherited from their colonizers. That is the reason why African civil servants are usually trained to ensure that they provide excellent services, which was a practice adopted after colonization. Furthermore, the schooling and training practices were borrowed from colonizers.
