Introduction
The movie Snowden is an eye-opener to unauthorized and unethical surveillance techniques. A software that could monitor and graph the entire movement of every individual in America (Snowden Movie, 30:48). Edward Snowden quits his job and flies to Hong Kong, meeting with Journalists Ewen MacAskill, Director Laura Poitras, and Glenn Greenwald to reveal the Xkeyscore – a colossal virtual surveillance program – employed by the National "Spying" Agency (NSA). Edward Snowden quotes:
"What I'm about to tell you is top secret. A conspiracy was bigger than all of us. There's a powerful group of people out there secretly running the world. I'm talking about the guys no one knows about, the invisible ones. The guys who play God without permission are the top one percent of the top one percent. And now I think they're following me" (Elliot, Mr. Robot S1, E1).
As a computer expert and a consultant, Edward was bound by a duty to absolute secrecy; however, he discovered that terabytes of data were recorded by tracking any digital communication. The data collected was not only about terrorism – as the NSA claimed but also about American citizens and a foreign government. Fed up with the job at the agency, he meticulously collected hundreds of thousands of classified documents that proved the seriousness of the "privacy is a myth" and the violation of the people's rights. We live in an era where the consumption of computers, mobile phones, and social media is an intricate part of our everyday social life. When Edward exposed how the government uses it to spy on the people, However, Snowden raised a lot of different opinions – he may be considered a patriot, hacker, or a whistleblower, which is ultimately up to you to decide. However, what is clear from the movie is to be careful and fully aware of what you consume online (Shore, 2019)
Issues Raised by Snowden Movie
According to legal experts and the government, Edward Snowden committed Espionage, which categorized the leaking of state secrets as an act of treason. Despite this accusation, Edward defended his action that he had an ethical obligation to act. Snowden justified that his whistleblowing was a duty to inform the citizen what happens in their designation, which is contrary to them. According to Edward, the government's abuse of their privacy had to be put in the spotlight regardless of legality. The questions remain What harm did he cause? What benefits does Snowden's action bring? Should we justify that action of Snowden as ethical though legally prohibited? If one was Snowden, what would you have done and why? Is whistleblowing ethically ideal? Many people agreed with his action. People justified his actions as principled, pointing out that Snowden acted from a sense of civic goodness. They argue that Snowden only violated the secrecy agreement but not a loyalty oath – a mere contract compared to the public's goodness. He might have done a crime, but he had done the nation a boundless service.
