Reasons for Wanting to Become a Counselor
I believe that a day is deemed successful if one has played a part in positively affecting another person’s life. Hence, this is what motivates me to become a counselor. Every day people at different stages in life are going through tough situations, and what they need is someone to talk to and help them navigate different challenges in their lives. The other reason for wanting to become a counselor is that I want a career where I can experience a sense of meaning in life. As a counselor, one gets to connect with other people and even help them during the most challenging periods in their lives. Consequently, as a counselor, one gets to be in a career that gives them fulfillment and meaning in life as they are always helping others.
When and How I Made the Decision to Become a Counselor
I made a decision that I wanted to become a counselor after noticing that I had a drive in me to always sit with other people during their good and bad times. I noticed from a young age that people found it easy to talk to me, and this earned me the name “good listener” at school and at home. Hence, when my neighbor, who had four siblings, called and asked if I had time to talk, it confirmed to me that counseling was the career path I wanted. After meeting with her, she told me that she was going through a difficult moment in her life and was afraid to tell anyone else because she feared they would judge her. After talking for about an hour and a half with her, she said she felt better, and we planned to meet again at the same time the next day. After about a week of talking, she was feeling better and happier, and she would always send me thank-you notes almost every week after that. Thus, after seeing how being there for my neighbor had been helpful, I felt a sense of fulfillment and decided this is what I was destined for; providing encouragement during life challenges to others and significantly helping individuals improve their lives.
What it takes to be Counselor
For one to become a counselor, one major requirement is that an individual hold a master’s degree in counseling, marriage and family therapy, or pastoral counseling. Furthermore, it is critical that one attaines around 600 hours of supervised practical experience. I believe...
