Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) and Evidence-Based Practices

Other (Not Listed) Instructions:

One of the primary roles of research in the field of clinical psychology is to ensure that the treatment provided is based on the best and most current evidence available. A quick search in the Library for any therapy approach will yield thousands of articles on the effectiveness of that approach. Sometimes the study will focus on using the approach for a specific disorder, or perhaps with a certain population. All of these are important areas of focus. In this discussion, you will examine the early efforts to study the effectiveness of therapy, along with some of the key factors in conducting this research.
Begin by discussing the history and reasons for studying the effectiveness of therapy.
Describe how this led to the use of manualized therapy.
Discuss what is meant by evidence-based practices and their role in the field of clinical psychology.
Finally, describe efficacy and effectiveness in clinical research.

The selected clinical psychology treatment approach is cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT). This therapy approach emanated from Aaron Beck's efforts to foster optimal health outcomes for his patients by addressing the lack of verbalized thought validity and cognitive distortions in their thinking. His clinical observations led to understanding depression as a cognitive disorder instead of a mood problem. Beck outlined cognitive therapy for depression and, in collaboration with his colleagues, published a study on the effectiveness of cognitive therapy. It is crucial to study CBT effectiveness because of its clinical significance. The approach incorporates practical and hands-on experiences where the counselor and the client interact in an organized approach to elicit behavioral changes, which improves the patient's life quality. CBT is also used for different problems as feasible treatment modalities can be applied based on the patient's diagnosis or issues (Chand et al., 2023). This led to manualized therapy because the approach entails structured sessions that last roughly sixty minutes that happen weekly for eight to twelve weeks (Chand et al., 2023). In addition, the therapist has to customize the therapy to the patient's preferences, values, and culture in order to achieve optimal results.
